Without modifications or options the THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter / Battery Safety Calorimeter has been used for many applications on Anode Materials. For example: Richard and Dahn (9th IMLB, Edinburgh 1998) reported results on the thermal stability of MCMB (heated to 2,800°C) as a function of Li content and electrolyte type. LiPF6 : EC : DEC and LiBF4 : EC : DEC electrolytes were used. The MCMB was lithiated to varying amounts by discharging coin cells and powder from the electrolyte pellet used in a modified Accelerating Rate Calorimeter container for the test. Standard Heat-Wait-Search Tests were carried out. SELF HEATING RUNAWAY REACTIONS COMMENCED BELOW 80°C FOR LiPF6 AND BELOW 50°C FOR LiBF4 The self heating peak observed raised the temperature to above 200°C when the test was terminated. Overlapping reactions were observed and temperature jump experiments carried out to aid data analysis. Experimental Conclusions 1. LiFP6 is SAFER than LiBF4 2. SEI properties are independent of Li in MCMB 3. First process: SEI decomposition (of SEI formed when Li inserted into MCMB) 4. Second process: consumption of intercalated Li. Basic Conclusions The THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter / Battery Safety Calorimeter can simply evaluate Anode Materials to give relative safety in construction. Tests can be done simply and quickly with easy data analysis. This work could be extended to any anode materials. 加速量熱儀(ARC)
