The paper presents the development of techniques to study flows in human conducting airways in
order to improve understanding of underlying mechanisms in asthma and COPD. These include high-speed
particle image velocimetry (PIV) as well as tomo-PIV measurements in geometrically realistic transparent
airway models obtained through additive layer manufacturing (ALM) of segmented lung CT scans. This
enables study of breathing dynamics, which will allow validation and development of CFD models and in
vivo MRI velocimetry.
