We have shown an easy-to-use technique (no sample preparation, no chromatography) that shows extraordinary potential for the quantitative analysis of drugs of abuse in forensic toxicology when coupled to the TSQ Quantiva triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, all in much shorter timeframes than it is possible using liquid chromatography techniques.
Quantitative analysis of several drugs in a mix from 7 L of urine is demonstrated, with LODs down to 0.5 ng/mL and LOQs slightly higher and compound dependent.
As the electrospray signal from paper spray lasts ~35 s, it can accommodate many SRM transitions per sample. This, coupled to available faster scanning speed on the TSQ Quantiva mass spectrometer, opens the stage for the analysis
of more complex mixtures.
To investigate possible interferences in the SRM transitions, isolation widths of 0.2 amu or alternative transitions 首ld be investigated on the TSQ Quantiva
mass spectrometer.
Compounds affected by matrix effects might benefit from alternative solvent/modifier combinations and advances in paper spray substrate development.
