SUMMARY Wear characteristics, including running-in, mild wear and severe wear, have been examined using laboratory wear machines. X-ray and both optical and electron microscopy techniques have been used to examine surface hardening and oxidation of metals in an attempt to explain some of .the metallurgical features of wear.
