The DAC configuration is an integral part of an SPM which can have a significant impact on the performance of the entire system. When considering its influence on the resolution, dynamic range, and noise level of the control system, the number of bits in the DAC(s) is unimportant relative to the way the DACs are configured in the system. The three DAC configurations in the NanoScope III, IIIa, and E control systems provides the flexibility to acquire data without worrying about the scan size and scan offset restrictions inherent in the single DAC design.
